Which Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you’re like most homeowners, getting window treatments in Destin that add privacy and noise blocking to maintain your sanctuary is important to you. Any window treatment is more effective than an uncovered window. Yet there are some window treatments that offer more privacy than others, especially on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Specialty Windows

All of the large, standard windows in your house are simple to cover with almost any window treatment like Destin shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

You might encounter some situations when you need a particular style of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These might be:

  • Bathroom windows where excess moisture can cause problems for fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are long and skinny where window treatments can be pushed around by the door’s movement.

  • Specialty-shape windows like eyebrows, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where conventional rectangular blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without hiding the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll want window treatments that go the distance to add privacy to your house.

As a bonus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Window Treatments That Give You The Most Privacy

The window treatments we recommend most for privacy are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when complete privacy and sound control is your goal. To let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For tall or high windows, you can always position the louvers at an angle to let light in while still maintaining privacy.

Plantation shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are water resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another great window treatment for privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. Though they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in moisture-resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window treatment gives you at least some privacy, there are a few that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add a an airy feeling to a room. But they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, particularly when it’s dark out.

Another window covering we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can snap or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t totally close the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not doing you any favors for privacy.
