Spring is finally in the air, Destin! If you’ve been huddled inside your home to hide away from the cold, now’s the perfect opportunity to crack those windows and think about spring cleaning. You might have your usual spring cleaning checklist, but all too often homeowners can forget a few important tasks.
Here are our tips to improve your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you’re able to enjoy our favorite season in Destin.
Clean Your Windows For Spring
It’s normal to get out of bed in the middle of March and realize that the lousy view out your window isn’t because of winter weather–it’s because of a gunked window. Spring is an ideal time to give your windows a deep clean. Get that beautiful view back with the following instructions.
If the window opens, completely open it and clean out any dirt or debris in the sill. First clean out as much as you can with a dry cloth or small brush, then wash with warm soapy water and a rag to clean out the rest. This helps your window open and close more easily, and ensure your window can close completely.
Spray down the window with a glass cleaner. You can use either a store-bought chemical cleaner, or make a homemade cleaner with two parts warm water and one part vinegar.
Swab the windows with a microfiber cloth. These cloths are preferred for cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks.
Don’t Neglect to Clean your Window Treatments
A crystal-clear glass window isn’t worth much the window treatment isn’t just as clean.
For fabric window treatments like drapes or curtains, cleaning can be a hassle. For thick fabric window coverings, remove them from the wall and take them outdoors to shake and get rid of any loose debris, then leave them in the washer and run on cold water and air dry them. For thinner fabrics, you’ll want to be more delicate in how you handle them, so wash them by hand in a sink or tub.
Plantation shutters might be the easiest window treatment when it comes to cleaning. Get rid of dust by wiping down with a microfiber cloth or duster. To spot clean, use a slightly wet cloth to get rid of the stain, then dry with a cloth.
Now is also an ideal time to think about switching up your window treatments. Check out the Sunburst Shutters Destin Idea Gallery to see stunning photos of ways a new window treatment can revamp.
Pay Attention to Your Appliances
Your refrigerator, stove and washing machine are as much pieces of furniture as they are appliances. Particularly with newer appliances such as those made of stainless steel, looks can be equally as important as functionality. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and get them back to the condition they were when you first bought them.
Stainless steel appliances can be shined up with a solution made of 1 teaspoon dish soap and 1 quart of warm water, applied with a damp cloth and air-dried.
Don’t Neglect a Single Surface
You’re probably going to spend some time on your walls and floors when you do spring clean, but don’t forget to spread some attention around to some of those often neglected surfaces. Below are just a few of the spots that are easy to skip over when doing your spring cleaning:
Any knobs or switches that get touched a lot. These could be in the bathroom, on electronics, or any other spot in your home.
All surfaces in your shower, including the door, floor, and soap ledge.
The top sides of your ceiling fan blades.
Under your appliances - especially the big appliances such as your refrigerator164 and dishwasher.
