Interior Shutter Myths Debunked

October 10, 2017

The Destin shutter pros have busted some shutter myths previously. During our last myth-busting binge, we tackled a few common misconceptions homeowners have about plantation shutters in Destin.

This time, the Sunburst Shutters Destin experts are back to set it straight on a few more myths we’ve heard from shutter-buyers around Florida. Let’s take a look.

Myth #1: “Plantation Shutters Are For Southern Homes.”

When some people hear the phrase “plantation shutters,” they typically conjure the image of a huge, sprawling southern mansion surrounded by hills. Although it’s true that they owe their name to that location and time, plantation shutters were seen commonly in homes much earlier and much later than the Antebellum South.

Plantation shutters probably picked up that name because they were commonly found in nearly every home back then. Because of their immense popularity there–with their ability to keep homes cool during hot summers, and offering excellent views for those sprawling houses–the name stuck.

Nevertheless, plantation shutters can give those exact same perks to any style of home. Craftsman style houses can utilize shutters, just like Colonial homes, Cape Cod houses, and even cottage houses can.

Myth: “My Home Style Won’t Work With Shutters Is Too Eclectic For Shutters.”

Because plantation shutters have been used in so many houses and for such a long time, some homeowners might think that shutters can seem a little stale. We’ve worked with a customer previously who claimed that their home was “too eclectic” for shutters, which was a tad confusing–since shutters are the one window treatment that can accentuate any style.

Plantation shutters are versatile and can work with any style, from chic parlor to fun man cave. And don’t forget, shutters have been popular for so long for a reason: they’re always in style. Put in a set of the newest and most fashionable curtains and they’ll likely be passé in just a few seasons. Shutters stay beautifully in fashion for decades, especially when you choose patented Polywood plantation shutters.

Myth: “Shutters And Blinds Are Pretty Much The Same Thing.”

For some reason, there seems to be a lot of confusion over the difference between shutters and blinds. Maybe it has to do with the confusion between “louvers” and “slats,” or it’s the similarity in shape that causes the confusion. Regardless, blinds and shutters are pretty easy to distinguish when you look at their features. Here’s the basic breakdown of the two.

Myth: “All window coverings offer about the same energy efficiency.”

As the “Blinds vs. Shutters” table illustrated, window coverings can vary by a wide margin on how energy efficient they are. The structure, material, and construction will all have a big impact in how energy efficient a window treatment is.

Offering no benefits in energy efficiency is a bare window without a covering. Offering just a tad more energy efficiency are your common retail mini blinds. Up a little further on the spectrum are draperies and heavier fabric window treatments. Getting even closer to energy efficient territory we have typical wood shutters and cellular shades, made to offer sun-blocking protection and temperature reduction. But at the very top of the mountain are Polywood plantation shutters, built to both reflect and block sunlight and outside heat from moving through your window.
