4 Shutter Myths Exposed

April 03, 2017

We make a priority of talking to residents about shutters in Destin.

And even if it may come as a surprise, when we talk to homeowners in the Panhandle, we hear a few myths about shutters repeated. Let’s take a few moments to set the facts straight and dispel some oft-repeated myths about plantation shutters so you can make the perfect choice for your home when it comes time for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Easy to DIY

Many home projects are simple enough to do by yourself in a single weekend. Installing shutters may not be one of them, though.

Putting in new shutters can be tricky from the start, as the measurements of the window dimensions have to be incredibly precise to ensure a smooth and tight fit, as well as to make sure your windows can still open and shut. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, lifting large shutter panels and installing them straight may be a tough job. Unless each step of the process is done correctly, you could end up with uneven shutters or draftiness from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Will Make The Home Look Dim

Some home designers might shy away from shutters, believing they’ll make a space look dark or dimly lit. This myth probably stems from unfamiliarity with plantation shutters.

Think of this: light from the sun always comes into your home at an angle. An interior shutter will give you the ability to change that angle by adjusting their louvers, offering you more effective control over how much light comes inside. And keep in mind, shutters can still swing completely open to let in as much light as you could want.

Myth: Shutters Cost a Lot

It’s true that shutters won’t be as cheap as discount rack blinds from a hardware store. But this myth is more about how you think about shutters. If you think about shutters as just a plain decoration that isn’t expected to last more than a year or two, then yes, shutters are a little expensive. But shutters are a permanent addition to your house, and have several benefits: shutters are energy efficient and are shown to lower heat and air conditioning bills, they can increase your house’s appraisal value, and shutters can last generations, unlike blinds–which will have to be replaced repeatedly throughout the years.

Myth: Shutters Make a House Look Old-Timey

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” has caused the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it definitely isn’t true. While shutters were mainstays of older home styles stretching back decades, their crisp, clean lines and neutral colors allow them to fit in just as easily with more fashionable, modern designs. Shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
